Before you can have your own Joomla website (compared to hosted blog like wordpress), you need to buy a domain name. Buying a dot com usually costs just a little over $10 and it's super easy.

You may have heard of godaddy.com. (They advertise a lot.) I tried them and long story short, I didn't like them.

My go to domain service is Namecheap.com. They also provide hosting with unbelievably cheap introduction prices so you can get your Joomla website up and running for less than $30 for the first year.

How to Register a Domain Name

  1. Choose a domain name. It's important to choose well because the longer you've had your domain name and branded yourself, the harder it is to change and rebrand. Here's a few tips for choosing a good domain name.
  2. Create an account at NameCheap.com or another domain registrar. This is where you pay for registration and ownership of a new domain name. The fee is an annual fee - sometimes the first year is sold at a discount.
  3. Log in and see which of your wish-list domain names are available.
  4. Buy a domain. Complete the purchase process and you're done.

Watch the video to see how easy it is. Truly, the hardest part of buying your domain name is finding the right one. After you have your domain name registered, the next step is to set up some hosting for your Joomla website.
